Passing Precious Down

My sister and I recently had an opportunity to sort through our mother’s personal belongings. As we pulled up in front of her house that morning, I had a sinking feeling in my stomach. I didn’t want to go in - I knew that our mother’s absence would be difficult to handle.

My sister, on the other hand, was excited, and I was surprised to hear that. “I’m curious to see what we’ll find!” she said, smiling widely. Her statement and her attitude completely changed my outlook. Oh sure, I still cried like a baby when we first went in, but once I had that out of the way we ended up having a great time together that day. And we did find ourselves some treasures.

My favorite find of the day was this little book, tucked in with Mom’s crafting supplies. {I’m not sure why it was there, but heaven forbid I should judge! Who knows what kind of stuff will be found tucked amongst my crafting supplies when I’m gone!}

"Oh! A book about grandchildren…let’s have a look…” and I was pleasantly surprised to see that this little book had belonged to my great-grandmother and the photos were of her grandchildren – my mom and her siblings.

{This photo is of my mom and her siblings. Mom is in the floral jumper.}

A simple little book, with sweet old photos.

And toward the back of the book were a few photos of her great-grandchildren {my siblings, cousins, and me} as little kids - photos I'd never seen before!

I know this little book was once precious to my great-grandmother.
And I'll bet she had no idea how precious it would be to me.

It's absolutely beautiful! A precious treasure indeed - much nicer than the albums today called "brag books", that's not a word I've ever liked. I love it: thanks for letting us have a peep Deb

I love the title of the booklet - and your sister's attitude to sorting your dear Mum's house. I'm whistling the tune from The Life of Brian now ...

What a wonderful find. My uncle has a book that belonged to my nan where she recorded everything...birthdays, deaths, heights of my dad and uncle, all our illness dates, when it snowed.....the list is endless. Needless to say, I have borrowed it with the condition that it is wrapped in cotton wool lol.

What a pleasant surprise to find the little album. Now, make sure to pass the book down to the next generation so these people will not be forgotten

Definitely precious - I have one that my Grandma used to have that looks similar. Fun imaging my Mom as one of the kids ;)

Grateful for your sister's attitude and that you were both able to be together to start the sorting.

What a fabulous find on a day that would have been difficult at times. I am glad that your sister was able to help you look at it in a different light before you started.
