While the cat's away...

Doug and I have a fairly traditional household.
I buy the groceries, he mows the lawn.

* * * * * *

Now, I don't claim to be 100% health conscience with the food I bring home, but I think it's safe to say that I do a much better job than my other half.

When I came home from my hospital stay this past week, there were sweets and treats tucked here and there. Seems that Doug did a little grocery shopping on his own...

The package of pastries from the bakery was already gone by the time I got around to taking pictures, as well as a slice of cheesecake he confessed to while I was giving him a hard time about his shopping skills.

{My afternoon snack - Hi Amy!}

What about you?
Who in your house makes better choices at the grocery store?

Not only do I make better decisions of what to put in our trolley .. try shopping with a food manufacturing engineer whose job it is to make sure many supermarket products are packaged correctly - good grief - it is a VERY slow and painful trip down those aisles if he comes with us! He has been known to take products up to the service desk to ask if they can be taken off the shelves because he didn't think the caps were sealed properly ... most notably this occurs with baby food, but he squeezes mayonnaise, drink bottles and pretty much everything and anything that has a cap .... urgghhh! ;-)

Enjoy your pear!

I do the grocery shopping but I still appease Nick by making sure he has the snacks and sweets he likes. I bake so there is always cookies in the house. If I don't come home with poptarts I'll end up finding twinkies and hohos instead.

Lol cute post - I'm surprised he didn't buy any Snowballs. ;)

I am the bad shopper in my household. I'm the diabetic who puts the sweets in the basket. My husband has a list and only buys what is on the list. He zips in and out of the store in five minutes. I take about an hour to grocery shop.

DH does all the grocery shopping at our house. He makes better choice than I would, I think. I do make an extra stop at the produce market to stock up on fruits & veggies, though.
Rinda
p.s. maybe Doug was just engaged in stress eating. . . I know my eating habits would seriously go to hell if Paul were in the hospital.

eh hem, guess who bought the pears??? DH

like Irene, my husband sticks to the list, but he needs me to be brand-specific, in fear of getting it wrong!

You have no idea how excited I was to see your comment on my blog - I am so glad you are well and home safely again!

Like Rinda I think maybe D was comfort eating due to worry....junk food is certainly what I would tend to eat if seriously upset!!
I do the supermarket shop in our house....not so much because OH would make bad choices.....I can do that all by myself....but because he makes expensive choices...our bill is always far higher when he goes shopping!!!
But he is very good at mowing the lawn!!

DH for sure! He complains that I never buy any actual meals and prefers to go to the organic supermarket alone as the bill is double when I go. I don't complain about that one at all, LOL!

I eat junk food too when I'm worried or sad.

Mmm..! I do all our grocery shopping in our house. Most of it is eaten by TTO, as you can imagine! His Dad would probably buy about half of what we actually needed for the week and he is always tempted by a bargain, so a lot of it would be brands I don't recognise lol

It's good to see you well enough to talk about food again!

that is too funny. my husband is the same way. i am the grocery shopper. if i buy some good sweets, i have to hide them or he will eat them all in one day.

Ha! I do the shopping online. The only time my husband goes in a grocery store, is on holiday, or if he goes to one for a sandwich...(to be fair, he works away from home and is busy)
We have a standing family joke though - I ask the guys "Is there anything we need on the shopping order?" and DH says, "Yes, crisps, sweets, chocolate, fizzy pop". I'm gradually training DH to write stuff on the shopping list BEFORE it runs out.... DS is much better at that job!
So glad you're feeling fit enough to notice what's in the cupboards! It's good that you're getting back to normal - just take it easy though. XX

In Doug's defense, I bet that was stress eating more than anything. He was worried!

Ok, ok, so maybe it WAS a little bit of stress eating this past week, however, Doug's known for his attachment to junk food whenever he happens to go the the grocery store. Just for the record. ;o)

I do all the shopping in our house but have to confess to buying more than the odd packet of crisps, biscuits or chocolate.

I definately would cut Doug some slack....reckon he's needed some comfort food while you've been ill! If I let DH loose on the food shopping on a weekly basis, we would be bankrupt in no time! LOL!!

Rod has done more shopping since February and he's a "stock up" kind of shopper! If I want one box of cereal, he'll by 3, one bottle of dish detergent, he'll buy 2, etc. And he's very big on slipping in extra sweets! And I might add, I was up 2 pounds at the doctor this morning because of my stress eating over you last week! Gee, it feels good to blame it on someone else! Thanks, Sweetie! Love you! xo

When The Steve and I first dated, he brought ingredients over to prepare dinner - a bag of prepped salad, slices of turkey and ... wait for it ... quorn sausages. No supplementary ingredients required apparantly.

I always do the shopping!!!

Gosh Deb I have just read the last few of your blog posts I had no idea you were sick and in hospital. So sorry to hear about it but glad you are home. I would have come to visit you if I had known, hope you are well on the mend now.

Oh it's definitely me! He'll come home with 7 kinds of chips and 3 kinds of ice cream. It's like sending a 10 year old boy shopping!

I do almost all the grocery shopping. If Tracy goes, I usually get at least two phone calls while he's there. Recently we've gone together a couple of times, and divided up the list. That has gone quite well, but I'm the one who makes the list! We've recently tried to get off most foods with preservatives so both of us are being label conscious.
