Flowers in the House This Weekend

Good day, blog friends!
Today I'm combining my regular weekend recap with a little Flowers in the House link-up with my florist friend Jane over at Small But Charming. Come on in...

What photo shoot in my house would be complete without a cameo by Whiskers Jay?

I can never resist a sweet bunch of mini-carnations when I pass them in my grocery store! I have a small collection of old camping cups on a shelf in my kitchen, so I pulled one down, dusted it off, filled it with a chunk of floral foam, and proceeded to arrange (and re-arrange...) mini-carnations until the floral foam was close to crumbling. Ha - if any of my flower-pro-blog-friends have any tips for working with floral foam I would totally dig that!

I really did consider what I might be able to bring in from my garden this month, but the only thing cut-able right now are sunflowers and no way did I have the heart to chop any of those down. I ended up spending more money than I should have on some grocery-store sunflowers, complete with some twigs that Whiskers has been munching on since Saturday morning.

Meanwhile, outside in our dirt...

Carrie treated Doug to a Father's Day breakfast on Saturday morning, and then they checked out a new driving range called Top Golf. While they were off and entertained, I busied myself with laundry, grocery shopping, and baking a double batch of banana chocolate chip muffins. I had a ton of bananas that I didn't want to waste, and man, that was a lot of muffins. I sent some home with Carrie, froze a bunch for later, and gave some to my sweet father-in-law for a Father's Day treat.

A good chunk of my Saturday afternoon involved finishing up my "weekend road trip" mini-book. I'm happy with the final results, and I'll share more about that tomorrow. :o) It felt so good to play with paper again, but by the time that project was done I was ready to switch back to fabric.

Saturday evening Doug grilled burgers out in the heat - turkey for me (yum), venison for him (ew)...

We met Doug's dad and siblings for a Father's Day breakfast yesterday morning. I wish I could describe to you what an awesome dad my father-in-law is, how he has passed on some stellar fathering skills to his sons, and how grateful Carrie and I are for Doug. But this is a post about flowers in my house...

And baking and sewing and a cat...

I've had an idea in my head for a quilt square for Fiona's friendship quilt project, so I spent some time working on that yesterday afternoon. {You can see my squares here.} My trusty furry side-kick was right there in the mix, and I don't think he minded at all that the idea in my head did not translate out through my hands like I had hoped. Whiskers purred while I grumbled.

Back in the kitchen yesterday... I baked a yummy batch of carrot cake cupcakes using my grandma's recipe, and then I gave her a call and we chatted for a while. I asked her questions about her dad and also my grandpa and I loved our conversation so much. I'll blog about those cupcakes and my conversation with my grandma this week too.

So, yeah, a weekend filled with baking, crafting, sewing, cat tricks, phone calls, photographing stuff for future blog posts, some Father's Day love, and the ever present Flowers in the House.

Here's wishing you a fantastic week ahead!

You live such la dolce viva.
Literally and figuratively.

as always thanks for sending a little sweetness our way with your flowers.

You could get a roll of 1/4 inch clear florists tape. Tape around edge of container, make a grid with tape and then tape over grid to secure to vessel. Fill with water and add flowers.
No muss no fuss no crumbly oasis!

The flowers (indoors and outdoors) are lovely. After a few years of scrapbooking I've found that mini-books are much simpler. Can't wait for the post on yours. My weekend was filled with moving/unpacking boxes as will be next weekend. Enjoy your week.

You had another awesome weekend! You and my mom would get along well. You are both crafty and she loves to quilt. She actually has a long arm machine in her house. Lots of people take their quilt tops to her so she can do the quilting on the machine. It's amazing and fun. See you soon!

Love your sunflower bouquet....and know just what you mean about not cutting your garden ones.....somehow they always look so magnificent and 'right'out there.

I'm no florist but you can try doing a criss cross of clear tape across the top of your container and the grid of tape will hold the flowers in place.
I know what you mean about leaving flowers in the garden, they just look right out there!

I was going to be happy with my little peek at Jay's front legs so was delighted to see him happily mixed in with scraps of fabric :) What a wonderful and productive weekend. I am horrible at flower arranging but took a class through our church and learned so much in the first 5 minutes. I do the tape grid like those have mentioned above in comments.

It may have taken some work, but that carnation bouquet is lovely---as are the rest of the photos in this fun post!

Gorgeous photos! We call flower foam oasis and my mum always dampens it before trying to arrange anything in it ... might that help?

Only someone who loves her garden would buy flowers when she had some growing! I love it!!

Love the shade of the mini Carnations! Instead of florist foam have you ever thought of a frog (not the animal)?

Deb...I understand about leaving the sunflowers. I only had one and couldn't bear to cut it! Your bought bouquets are just perfect! I really like the little mini book. Interested in learning more about those. Glad you had such an awesome weekend...happy week ahead! Smiles...Susan

I love the flowers in the camping cup. We recently discovered a shop here selling old style enamel and it's very hard to resist

You've inspired me. I just planted a pack of sunflower seeds and I'm making burgers for dinner (portobello mushroom for me).
