It's true. I made food using venison and it was an interesting experience.
♥
Doug brought some ground venison back from his hunting trip to Illinois last November, and this past weekend I used some to make a big pot of chili.
The issues were definitely all in my head, but it wasn't an easy thing for me to do. Just knowing that it was meat from a deer made it difficult for me to handle. I questioned why I never cringe when I open a package of ground beef or turkey {although come to think about it, I do kind of cringe at those too...}.
I made the same basic chili recipe that I always make, and in the end it actually tasted the same as it does when I use ground beef. I dished up a small bowl for myself, with a large side of cornbread and made my way through it. Yes, I ate deer meat.
In the end Doug ended up with five bags of chili in the freezer. They'll serve him well on future camping trips. As for me, I'm not sure I'd be so quick to cook with venison again. It's just not for this girl, even though I know it earned me some hubby points.
Guess I'll have to figure out different means for making hubby points in the future.
Hm...what to do...what to do...

I bet you made it taste good, though! (But I'm right with you - I feel exactly the same way)
Love that little dish holding the onion/garlic. I couldn't eat it either but I would make it for the husband if need be.
Just don't think of Bambi ;-)
Tracy's cousin gave us some venison hot dogs he had the Amish make after deer hunting last fall. I have to admit they are very good. And I guess we're just immune to the idea of cows and pigs and chickens being an issue.
Venison is delicious and good for you, as it is very low in fat! I eat it in Spaghetti Bolognaise and as a burger in a bun. Yum!
Oh Deb, you're such a good wife! Does Doug usually cook it himself? I grew up eating venison (I know, hard to believe, right?) and I honestly don't like the taste much. Although I never ate it in a dish like chili. That little dish with the garlic is SO ADORABLE! XOXO
Well done for giving it a go, if you try it another time just tell yourself that leaving it in the freezer isn't going to save the deer x
Oh gosh, you have a good imagination ... I'm sure you'll come up with something! ;)
One of the hardest things I have eaten was shark. I fixed it; it looked nice and probably tasted fine, but after one bit, I just couldn't do it. I couldn't eat a predator. :(
Such a tricky dilemma ...but your very first photo made me smile!
You ate Bambi!
