It will be treasured someday...

The young man, a painter by trade, decided to fashion a wooden box using scraps from the wood pile. He would use this box to store tools of his trade, he thought, and it would be something he had built himself.

Now, his brother and their friend were carpenters by trade. They scoffed at the idea of him building something - building anything - but that didn't stop him.

He measured, cut, and nailed until he was happy with the storage box he'd made. "I'll come back and paint it later," he told himself.

Imagine his surprise and sheer annoyance when he returned to find that his wooden box had been painted an awful shade of green. As he fumed, his brother and their friend enjoyed a hardy laugh - quite satisfied with the practical joke they'd pulled off.

25 years later...

She stood beside his paint truck, eyeing the contents in the bed: paint cans, masking tape, large rolls of paper, and a cool looking old wooden box that was faded from years in the sun.

"Doug?" she asked, "Can I have that box?"

"What box?" he half-laughed, half-spoke.

"That one!" she said, pointing at the box he'd built so long ago. "The one painted that awesome shade of blue."

And that is the story of how the box ended up in their home.
{Thanks, Don and Ron for painting it a color that I'd love!}

PS: Thanks for reading my story today. And thanks to Sian for encouraging us to tell a story on the first Sunday of every month. You can check out more stories here.

How lovely that something with such memories is now in pride of place in your home! It is a rather fetching shade of teal isn't it?

Hahaha...I love this story and I"m jealous you came up with such a good one cuz I'm having trouble this month!

Also, I don't think you fully captured the madness of Doug when they painted the box...he still is mad when he talks about it!

Love you! <3

Hahaha - I know, Carrie. I had him tell me the story again last night and I laugh every time I hear it. I worried that I wouldn't be able to convey his anger in my story. ;o)

And for those of you wondering what is in the box now? Splinters. The wood inside the box is in such bad shape that we don't use it for storage now.
