I have been checking these stalks daily, eargerly awaiting some blooms on top. Every time I think the new growth might be a blossom, it turns out to be another round of leaves. Enter: the ongoing [good natured] banter between Doug and I.
Me: "Hey!!! It's a bloom!"
Doug: "No, Deb, it's just another round of leaves."
Me: {pouty face} "Nuh-uh. You're not the sunflower expert, Doug."
Me: {a day or so later}: "You were right...just more leaves..."
And then last night, when the sun was setting, I took my camera out and saw this:
Doug says it's another round of leaves.
I say it's the beginning of a FLOWER!!!
What do you think?

Hard to tell! Usually sunflowers are very tall, so maybe these are more leaves. Keep us updated.
Well it does look pretty flowery to me but then again, they don't look as if they are at their full height. Don't make me choose!
Unless they're dwarf sunflowers....it does look like they may have some more growing to do.....but either of you could be right!!!!!
I don't think they're tall enough yet for flowers. All the ones I've seen are feet tall before flowers have shownup. Sorry.
ohhhhhh do I have to say???!! I think Doug is right @@ There are different varieties but the shortest we've ever had was taller than Nicholas when he was 6. I have a great photo of SweetGirl's mama with her sunflowers that I am going to email you.
~sigh~ Doug is going to be so happy that you are all on his side. Rats! ;o)
I'm afraid I also agree with Doug. The stalks need to get much taller, but think of the terrific shadows you will get from the enormous flowers!

When it's a bud, the things that look like leaves will be longer and very pointy instead of leaf shaped.
No idea - but fun to watch!
Flower, definitely flower! (I hope!) My goodness those babies are big! Love you! xo
I've grown lots of flowers, but never sunflowers so I'm clueless. I have to say, that last photo is wonderful no matter whether it is a flower or more leaves.
I think leaves. We're also growing sunflowers ~ shall we compare?
