I had the good fortune of spending some time with my sweet grandma while I was in California last month. She made lunch for me, we drank coffee together, and she gave me a lesson in crocheting.I've dabbled with crochet in the past, taught myself how to crochet a granny square by watching YouTube videos {Seriously? You can learn how to do anything on YouTube!}, and feel like I have the basics down.
{LOVE this photo of Grandma's hands with mine taken by my step-dad, Rod.}
What I really wanted to know from Grandma is how to do the stitch she uses for the countless afghans she's made for pretty much every member of our family. Someday I'll make one myself, now that I know the secret. ;o)
I loved spending time with her, and I know she enjoyed my company too. I found this free pattern for a funky little bird and stitched it up to send to her as a token of my appreciation for the crochet lessons.
I do think she's going to like this little birdie.

And I'm posting this today because my grandma is having surgery and I'd
love for you to keep her in your thoughts. It's a standard procedure,
but Grandma is 91 so it makes it a bit more tricky.
Her name is Gertrude,
and she's just the sweetest grandma ever.

very cute little bird. I don't think you are a beginner.
How wonderful that you still have Gertrude around to teach you crocheting! My grandmothers all died when I was young. I don't really even remember them. And the bird is adorable, I know she will love it!
Such a cute bird. She will love it. Hope the surgery went well, no matter how 'standard' a procedure is, it's still not something you really want to do once you pass 90. Wishing her a speedy recovery x
I'm wishing Granny Gertrude a speedy recovery and I know that the gorgeous wee birdie will put a smile on her face. x
That birdie is soooo sweet! And how cute is your grandma?! Of course we'll say a prayer for her!

Hope it all goes well for her....and how I wish she could come and teach me to crochet.
I need your grandma too - am trying to get the hang of it. Lovely post
Your birdie is so cute- she will love it and especially as you have just been spending 'hooky' time with her- I hope the surgery went well and she is recovering nicely x x
Wishing your Grandma well and a speedy recovery. I'm sure your little birdie will bring a smile to her it's very sweet and how clever are you to produce that after a lesson!
Good luck Grandma!
That little birdie is extremely cute Deb, it'll brighten her day!
the photo of all 4 hands with the wool is fabulous. I love crochet - I find it much more relaxing than knitting
Best wishes, Gertrude. I know she'll love the birdie.
What a cute birdie. You did a great job on it. Keeping your Grandma in my thoughts and praying for a speedy recovery.
I love everything about this post...that you still have your grandmother to enjoy, the picture of ya'lls hands and the adorable little bird you made her as a remembrance :)
Deb,
That is so precious! And what a wonderful gift of time for both of you.

Happy to report the surgery went well and hopefully Grandma will be going home today. I'm not up to going to see her, but praying I'll be out and about with her next week! This is a precious post, Deb, and I know Grandma will love it! Cutest bird ever! Thanks for all the prayers and well wishes on her behalf! Love you! xo
Wow you've got good genes that run in the family, 91 yrs is a great age and I'm glad all went well with your gran's surgery. I wish my gran could have shown me how to crochet a square. This is as precious as your dad teaching you to ride a bike. When I started to appreciate crochet, it was too late, my gran was too frail and she had to use a special Tracfone SVC phone for seniors with large keys and letters on the screen as she couldn't see that well.
I'm going to try using the youtube video to learn how to crochet too, thanks for the advice.
This little blue bird is adorable and something that one would pass on to family members through the generations.
How wonderful that you had time with your grandma - I hope the surgery went well.
My Mama made afghans for us when we were growing up, and I still use the yellow one she made me. It's over 30 years old but still looks great with no pulls or anything!
Truly, you are so talented. I'm not sure any amount of instruction would get me to the point of being able to create such an adorable gift! Like Cheri, my grandmothers all passed away many, many years ago.
Hello
