4th of July - Who will you honor?
As we approach our holiday weekend and look forward to celebrating the fourth of July/Independence Day, my mind has been focused on gratitude for those who have served our great country. I am humbled by the dedication, sacrifice, and courage of the men and women who dedicate their lives for a greater cause.

One such serviceman is my father-in-law, Dave. In 1968 he was honored with the "Marine Aviator of the Year" award and was invited to be a guest on the Ed Sullivan Show. I just love this photo of Doug's mom and dad with Ed Sullivan. And it's funny to see so few medals on his chest - this was early in his career and many more medals and honors would be bestowed on him later.

What an awesome picture! And such a nice tribute. My dad served in WWII, as did many of my Uncles. But not many from this generation. I love the 4th of July, but think about it more as a celebration of our great country than as of servicemen and women. Thanks for the different perspective.

Great photo! You know, when I saw this photo, my 1st thought was, "Wow, what a lot of medals!" The British Forces obviously do things differently: I served in the RAF for 11 years and have only a Veteran's badge(pin). Mind you, my BiL has his fair share after tours in both Gulf Wars. You and Doug have every right to be proud!
what a lovely story and a fab photo you must be so proud. My dad was in WWII as a rear gunner and was awarded the DFM and my mum was in the WAAF we owe a lot to a lot of people. Thanks for sharing x

Love this shot of Dave, P.J. and Ed! Such a classic! Rod served in a non-combative role during Viet Nam--Sea-bees support (construction and machanics). But thanks to the Sea-bees, the fighters and heros were able to do their jobs. And, boy, did they do them well! Hooray for the Red, White & Blue!!! xoxo
What a fabulous photo! My dad served in the Coast Guard during WWII but never left the Great Lakes area. I had several close high school friends who served in Viet Nam. Luckily they all came home alive. I never take your freedom for granted, but I'm always glad for a reminder like yours!
