Christmas {1/2 birthday} Annual Tradition

If you know anyone born under the sign of Gemini, you know how much they love their birthday. My Carrie is one of those, and since she's born under the sign of the twins she loves doubling up on the "Celebrating Me" gig. From the time she was a very little girl, she has known that December 6th is her half birthday. {"Mommy? "What are we going to do to celebrate me being five and a half?"}
.
This always seemed like a good opportunity for me to accommodate my sweet little princess, so I have obliged by presenting her with a small gift every year on December 6th. My gift for her each year has always been a Christmas ornament, and over the years she has acquired quite a collection. Last year as I packed up the ornaments I held hers aside in a separate box, knowing that this Christmas she would have her own home with her own Christmas tree. {insert sobbing and sentimental Mom stuff...}
.

Not only does Carrie have her own tree this year, but she also has a fireplace mantel. So for Christmas this year I made her a set of "JOY" letters in "Carrie Blue" that she loves so much. {These are cute little 4" paper mache letters that I painted and glittered the fronts. I also glued a small silver jingle bell at the base of the "J" to keep it from tipping over.}

I love celebrating Carrie, and plan to continue to do so every year on June 6th and December 6th...and every other day in between...every chance I get...

Merry Christmas, Carebear.
And a very happy 22-1/2 birthday to you!!!
PS: Thanks to Sian for inspiring a weekly Christmas story through her "Christmas Club" theme. xo

That's a very lovely story. I've thought about giving DS a half birthday, given that his proper birthday is so close to Christmas.

You are some Mum Deb!! What a lovely way to show Carrie how much she means to you. It's a perfect story about a Christmas tradition and I'm glad you held it over til Monday :)

yeah geminis (I'm a May one). Love that you boxed up all her decorations when you sorted out your red and white ones last year. How wonderful for her to unpack them all this year

Adore the Joy - I look at the paper mache letters every time I walk past them in HobbyCraft - a definate project once my living room is finished

Oh my goodness!! I have always made it known that it is my half birthday and guess what day that is......today! Carrie and I share a half birthday. It is also St Nicholas in Germany (have ancestors from there) so 6th December is my favourite! Unfortuantely no one else humours my half birthday so next year I'll demand presents and fuss :D

What a super idea and so neat that you kept all her decorations separate when packing up last year. Bet she's loving going through all of them as she decorates her first tree. Thanks so much for sharing Deb.

This is the opposite of what a friend of my son's does. His birthday is Christmas Day (how annoying must that be for a child?!) so he always had a 2nd birthday on June 25th!
Isn't it fun how kids love to be fractions of the next year? 7 and a half is so much bigger and better than 7 and a quarter.
This is a great tradition for you and Carrie to continue. Did you give up that box of ornaments without too much of a fight?!

What a wonderful tradition. I love that Carrie has a Christmas ornament on her half birthday and that she has her own tree this year must be quite sad for you - I am not sure I like my children growing up!

That is so sweet! I know she'll treasure those ornaments! This year, Jamie decided he was too big for a tree in his room, so all the sweet little boy ornaments are packed away, except for the favorite few I added to our tree ... boo, hoo, poor mommy! ;) They get big so fast! Enjoy your 22.5 year old! (and so seasonally appropriate - in Europe they celebrate today - St. Nicholas' feast day - with a gift!)

A perfect Christmas Club story and now i know why you waited for Monday. Henry noticed his half-birthday this year because at 15 and a 1/2 he's eligible for his driver's permit. We won't get around to doing the test until he's off school for break, thug.

I love this idea Deb. Claire has been saying she'd like to let Alice have a party near the middle of the year because her birthday is close to Christmas - a half birthday may be just the way to do it! May 18th - Alice's half birthday :)

What a great mum you are Deb! My son's birthday is 18th Dec and he hates waiting all year to have all of his celebrations in 1 week.

Oh Deb, what a lovely thing to do for Carrie, she is a very lucky girl :-)
I am not going to discuss this with my two though as their half birthdays would be the 12th and the 27th of December respectively - um ... NO WAY!!!!!

What a lovely story! We always give a Christmas bauble with their name on it for each new baby's first Christmas.

If my daughters read this they would try to come up with some kind of reason why they should have a half birthday too :)
