Birthday tribute to my mom.

I don't have many pictures of my mom (Marti) as a young girl, but I'm so happy that this is one of them. I have always loved this picture of her - it shows her cute and playful side. Today is her birthday, so with her permission I decided to share it with you, my blog friends.

The story goes like this:

In the late 1950's my mom's older sister (my aunt, Betty) had a boyfriend in the service and she wanted to send him a cheeky picture. So Mom, Aunt Betty, and Mom's friend Ann split the cost of a 12-exposure roll of black and white film. Each of them had four photos taken of themselves.

Well, Aunt Betty sent her picture, plus this one of my mom to her boyfriend, Otis (Side note: Why would you send a photo of your little sister to your boyfriend when she's this cute?!?!? I don't know...). Not long after, my mom got a letter from one of his service mates saying that Otis had torn off one of the ducks and wouldn't give him the rest of the picture...would Mom send him the rest? She did and they became pen pals for the next year.

Fast forward a few years later, and the pen pal sent another letter to my mom's address. This time his letter was answered by my grandmother, letting him know that my mom was married and had babies already. Aw, sad day for him, sweet story for us. :o)

Happy birthday, Mom!
Hope your day is just ducky!

Thanks, everyone! Deb, you make even the mundane things sounds good! Let this be a lesson to all other 15 year olds out there--be careful what you do because it may show up on your daughter's blog 53 years later! And thank you, DD, for the tribute and your sweetness! Love you bunches! xo

Lovely story.
Of course, in the magazine story, she'd have married the pen-friend...
Sorry he was sad, but glad your mum got married and had you!!
She was quite brave to pose in her swim-suit for her portrait!
