It's that time of year again when I celebrate another year on the planet. I would like to thank my mom for this opportunity, and would also like to thank the people in my life who shower me with love and birthday wishes on this day every year.All my life I have enjoyed having my birthday on May 1st. It's such a cool birth date, don't you think? The whole May Day, spring time, dancing with flowers in your hair vibe. Plus, the bonus for me has always been that my birthday came just two days after my mom's birthday.
Everyone says that the "firsts" are the toughest after you lose someone you love. The first Thanksgiving and Christmas without my mom, the first new year... Truth is that I missed her on those holidays, but had the feeling that it wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. But then her birthday came on Monday and that day was rough, and now my birthday is here and it's super weird that she's not.
I'll miss the birthday card in the mail from her. The cards she chose so carefully and then always underlined words or phrases in the print of the card to emphasize their meaning. The X's and O's at the end, the "Happy Birthday to my May-bee" always written before "I love you so much." Those very things that occasionally caused me to roll my eyes and think how sappy she could be sometimes. Those are the very things that I miss the most.
Anyway! Here I go - I'm off to enjoy my birthday with my girl C. She insisted that I take the day off work and she did the same. We're spending this day together and it includes lunch, shopping, pedicures, and a surprise that Carrie has kept secret. And tonight Doug will be in the mix as we celebrate over a birthday dinner.
Gosh, it's really hard to be too blue with a day like that to look forward to.

I understand the sadness too - I wept on my own birthday earlier in the year, for it was the first birthday in my life that I didn't hear my Mum say "happy birthday sweetheart".
